Wild Coastal Foraging Walk

A 6 mile walk along wild beaches and rugged cliffs in the company of a mountain guide and expert forager. Stunning views across the Irish sea, ancient hill forts, hidden gorges, caves and a wealth of delicious succulent and aromatic coastal plants. This will be a day to remember!

What: A moderately strenuous day walk from Saint Ninians cave to Isle of Whithorn along rocky shores, hidden coves and rugged cliff tops. Some short, steep ascents but mostly easy walking. While our emphasis will be on the rich wild food resources of this stunning bit of coast, we will not be able to ignore its wealth of human history (at least 6 hill forts or “Dun’s”) and the ethnobotanic relationships between the two. This will be a rare chance to encounter rock samphire (at its northern extreme) and scots lovage (at its southern extreme) growing together as well as sea kale, sea beet, wild carrot, stagshorn plantain, sea campion, sea sandwort and many other remarkable wild foods. We will supplement our lunch with a wild cook-in on a spectacular cliff-top – or cave – depending on the weather.
