Rewilding in Scotland – before and after. We’ve become accustomed to bare, barren, brown mountains believing they are ‘above the tree line’. There are plenty of countries much colder than the UK and owing to factors such as isolated wilderness where ‘distance to market’ overhead costs prevents farmers settling and tearing it all up. Our image of UK mountains is typically shown in the first photo. Too many sheep and deer (in Scotland) per hectare produces the short, hard grazed turf impression we have. What a difference when sheep and deer are removed!
